Sirithunga Jayasooriya
Siritunga Jayasuriya is the current leader of the United Socialist Party (USP) and has run for president in every election from 2005 to 2019. He is also a candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Siritunga Jayasuriya became a member of the youth league of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party in 1964. In 1974, he became one of the founding members of the Vama Samasamaja Group. Prior to dedicating himself fully to politics, he worked for the Ceylon Transport Board. Jayasuriya later became the leader of the Nava Sama Samaja Party, which split in the late 1980s, leading to the formation of the Marxist Workers’ Tendency, which eventually evolved into the United Socialist Party.
